I know. I had the same problem on my NA, many years ago. Nissan dealer wanted about $900 to fix it, said it was some controls that needed replacing. I wasn't willing to spend that much on that car, so I mounted a switch on the shifter, so that I could turn it on and off at will. It worked fine, with the added benefit that I could turn it off when I needed more acceleration. A lot depends on how willing and able you are to diagnose.
